Geometric correlations mitigate the extreme vulnerability of multiplex networks


Interdependent networked systems often form
critical infrastructures like electric power telecommunication transportation or water-supply
systems. These systems are extremely vulnerable against
attacks, which induce cascading failures that trigger the abrupt breakdown of the system
making it nearly impossible for real systems to recover, which means a loss of control. However, such cascading failures are avoided
if the layers of the system exhibit certain relations. These results can help to design efficient
protection strategies and more robust systems ranging from our financial system to power
grids.
