How Long Does an Epidural Last? – Linda Katz, MD – Obstetrics and Gynecology

– An epidural can last forever because once the epidural’s
placed into the back, into the epidural space,
the medication is actually in a syringe being pumped
in slowly, or a bag. So once that’s completed,
they’d just put another epidural canister up. So you could have an
epidural for six hours, eight hours, 10 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours. We use epidurals now
for surgery anesthesia or analgesia, so a man
having a prostate operation may have a continuous
epidural for two days. I had a hip replacement. I had an epidural for 24 hours. So, epidurals can go on indefinitely. It just requires adding more medication. Just like an IV, you run
out of the IV fluids, you hang another bag. So, that’s how epidurals
work and they can go on for however long the
patient needs the epidural.
