How to Choose a Doula

So what is a doula? A doula is a woman who
is experienced in childbirth, who provides emotional, physical and educational support
to laboring couples or as they’re preparing to have their babies. What you’re really looking for in a doula
is a match, someone that seems to be pleasing to you, with either her background, her personality,
her prior experience or just that right fit, that thing that makes you go, “Wow, this is
the right person for me.” The doulas are well trained, so all of that comes along with the
package. A doula can be chosen in many ways. You can
go online and search for doulas and learn about their background. And the program that
we have at Sharp Mary Birch has a special site on the Web page that talks all about
our doulas. There’s pictures of them, there’s information about their background, so that
the consumer can take a look and learn about the individual doula that works best for them. Very often people will look to the doula at
the end of the birth and say, “Wow, I couldn’t have done this without you.” And while that’s
super nice to hear, I always turn it back to them and say, “No, you were the ones that
did this.” And really make sure that the couple looks at it from their standpoint that you
guys were a great team, and I was just honored to be there as a part of this experience.
