Laphroaig Cask Strength – Tasting Notes

So this is the 10 Year Old Cask Strength,
regularly voted the best whisky in the world and the reason it’s voted the best whisky
in the world is depth of flavour, the layers of flavour that come in to this. There is
a lot of complexity in this one and the different between 10 Year Old Cask Strength and 10 Year
Old is just the way it’s bottled. it’s basically just barrier filtered to take out the charred
oak and the lumps of wood and then it’s straight into the bottle. Produced in batches as well
so within that it’s small amounts so we get variation and one batch will last basically
a year. So every year we’ve got a variation and different flavours coming through in the
Cask Strength, the 10 Year Old Cask Strength. So getting to the liquid, a really rich deep
gold for the colour, initially. On the nose, again a lot of kind of the characteristics
you’d associate with Laphroaig. Almost kind of seaweedy, you’re by the shore, you’ve got
the atmosphere, it’s very windy, very kind of wet almost. An underlying sweetness behind
this as well and then you get into some of the cereal flavours actually coming through
in this one as well. And when we taste, massive peat. Huge burst
of peat flavour at the front of the mouth. The thing about Cask Strength as well, why
it wins so many of these awards – the balance is fantastic in your mouth. You get some sweetness,
you’ve got spiciness from the American Oak, you’ve got the peat and then the kind of almost
rock salty flavours coming through in this one. Fantastically full body coming through
as well and the finish lingers and lingers and lingers for this one. So this is 10 Year
Old Cask Strength.
