Too Much of a Good Thing? Overuse of Health Care: National Poll on Healthy Aging

(soft music) – Low-value health care
services are services that aren’t going to improve
most patient’s health outcomes, and could lead to
unnecessary harms and costs. In the National Poll on Healthy
Aging we recently explored the issue of overuse
among older Americans. The first thing we asked
is whether older Americans feel that more health
care is usually better. We were surprised to
find that only 14% agreed that more medical treatment
is usually better. The next thing that we
asked about in the poll is whether health care
providers in general order to many services that
patients don’t really need. And over half of older Americans
agreed with that statement. However, older Americans
less commonly agreed that their own health care
provider order services that they don’t really need. One in four agreed with that statement. One thing that stood out
to us in our findings is that one in six older Americans felt that their own health care provider had ordered a test or treatment that they didn’t need in the last year. Yet, about half of those
patients ended up getting the service anyways, which suggested to us that patients have a lot of trust in their own health care provider
if they’re often willing to go ahead and get a service even if they feel like they don’t really need it. Patients don’t always
expect more health care. What they do expect is a
conversation with their provider. But what kind of health
care is gonna help them most to improve their health
is unlikely to lead to unnecessary harms and costs. There certainly are things
that are on the provider side of the equation or on the
patient side of the equation that can lead us down the
path of patients getting too many low-value services. So it’s important to identify
what some of those drivers might be and then develop
solutions to those problems. (soft music)
