What Are the Effects of Prolonged Labor? – Linda Katz, MD – Obstetrics and Gynecology

– The effects of prolonged
labor may be nothing. Lot of it just depends on the quality or the reserve that a placenta has. If you have a very healthy placenta that’s oxygenating your baby well and there’s no stress to the baby then prolonged labor
should not hurt anything. But, for example, if a mom’s 44-years old, or let’s say she’s a
week-and-a-half overdue and maybe that placenta
is not functioning at 100% then the longer that labor goes on that can be stressful to a baby. But again, it’s not something
you have to worry about because moms and babies are
being monitored during labor and we can see what’s happening
to a baby during labor.
