Why is an annual gynecology exam so important? – Parkland Medical Center

ROBYN D. STEWART: It’s
important for all women to see a provider once a year. An annual gynecologic
exam really doesn’t need to start
until about age 18, maybe earlier if you participate
in high-risk sexual activities. Women do not need
their first Pap smear screening for cervical
cancer until age 21. Doctors at the
gynecological exam are looking for signs of
diseases that the patient may not know about, such
as cervical cancer, or some sexually transmitted
diseases don’t have symptoms. Doctors are also looking
at irregularities in your menstrual
cycle that could signal other
gynecological issues that might need further work on.
